Ashley’s parents put her in the public school Bunker Hill Elementary, where she stayed until grade 3. Ashley’s senior year of high school saw a sign that said, “Education is our civil rights issue,” which made her think about becoming a teacher. Manning taught English to ninth and tenth graders at Coolidge High School in Washington, D.C., for two years. Later, Ashley spent her summers finishing classes for an M.A. in teaching at American University. After that, she went to Harvard Law School.
