Su began her career as an attorney at the Asian-Pacific American Legal Center. She was the Litigation Director for the non-profit civil rights group Advancing Justice L.A.
In the El Monte Thai Garment Slavery Case, Su was the main lawyer. As the leader of the civil case brought by the El Monte garment workers, Su successfully pursued a legal theory that held both the manufacturers and the people who kept the garment workers in captivity responsible for wage theft. She and other activists also asked for the workers to be able to stay in the United States under a visa program for people who help the government in criminal trials. Su was in charge of California’s Division of Labor Standards Enforcement when Jerry Brown was governor (DLSE). Su was the Secretary of the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency when Governor Gavin Newsom was in charge.
President Biden chose Su to be the Deputy Secretary of Labor under Secretary Marty Walsh on February 10, 2021. After she wasn’t chosen to lead the department, Asian-American leaders, including members of the Congressional Asian-Pacific American Caucus, asked the Biden Administration to make her Deputy Secretary.
On March 16, 2021, the Senate HELP Committee held hearings about Su’s nomination. The committee was happy with her nomination and sent it to the floor of the Senate on April 21, 2021. The Senate voted 50–47 to confirm Su for the job on July 13, 2021.
After it was said in 2023 that Walsh would leave the job, Su is expected to take over as acting secretary of labor. After Walsh announced his resignation, members of the Congressional Asian-Pacific American Caucus asked Biden to name Su as Walsh’s permanent replacement.
