Mathew Barzal AKA Mat Barzel is a Canadian ice hockey center who was born on May 26, 1997. He plays for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL).
The Islanders picked Barzal with the 16th pick in the first round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. In 2017–18, he was the best rookie in the NHL and won the Calder Memorial Trophy. He was the fifth Islander to win this award.

Know About Mat Barzel’s Career
Barzal’s Burnaby youth team took part in the 2010 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. In the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, the Seattle Thunderbirds picked him first overall. In his first season with the Thunderbirds, 2013–14, Barzal scored 14 goals and had 40 assists for a total of 54 points. Before the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, he was rated seventh in the NHL’s midterm rankings.
The New York Islanders picked Barzal 16th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. On September 10, he signed a three-year rookie contract with the Islanders.
Barzal’s NHL debut was on October 15, 2016.
Barzal’s first NHL game with more than one point happened on October 26, 2017, when he had a goal and an assist against the Minnesota Wild. The second goal of his career came in the final seconds of the Islanders’ 6–4 loss.

In Game 3 of the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs, Barzal scored the game-winning goal in overtime, giving the Islanders a 3–0 series lead over the Washington Capitals. The Islanders ended up winning the series 4–1 and moving on to the second round, where they played the Philadelphia Flyers, whom they beat in seven games.
In the Eastern Conference Finals, the Islanders lost in six games to the Tampa Bay Lightning, who ended up winning the Stanley Cup.
The Islanders reportedly gave Barzal a three-year, $21 million contract on January 11, 2021.
