Inside T.D. Jakes And His Wife Sarita Jakes’ Relationship
Serita and T.D. Jakes met when Jakes come to her church to hold a revival. “One of the people who really influenced me as a young convert was my husband because there weren’t that many young people in the church at that time… I was drawn to his ministry, but I didn’t realize that it was also a softening of my heart to want a relationship.” At first, the couple had a long-distance relationship because of T.D. Jakes was the part-time pastor at Greater Emmanuel Temple of Faith in Charleston, West Virginia, which was just starting out. During the time they were dating, Serita stayed in Beckley, which was 70 miles away. A year and a half after then, on May 29th, 1982, T.D. Jakes married Serita. Since then, they have been together, and in 2022 they will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.
T.D. Jakes went into full-time ministry soon after he and his wife got married. The revivals, on the other hand, didn’t happen very often, and it was hard for him to support his growing family. They could not afford diapers, so they used paper towels and duct tape instead. One by one, their utilities were turned off: first the phone, then the water, and finally the electricity. They would play games with their twins by candlelight to pass the time.

Six months after getting married, Serita and T.D. Jakes survived a terrible car crash. Serita hurt her foot in the crash. Doctors thought she would never walk again. But in 2012, she had surgery that went well. Serita Jakes had to go to the doctor because she was sick, and she got better after the doctors fixed a herniated disc in two places. They have five children and a few grandchildren. Serita Jakes’s children are Sarah Jakes Roberts, Cora Jakes Coleman, Jermaine Jakes, Thomas Jakes, Jr., and Jamar Jakes.
