Tarana Burke is an American activist from The Bronx, New York, who was born on September 12, 1973. She started the “Me Too” movement. In 2006, Burke started using Me Too to help other women who had been through similar things stand up for themselves.
In 2017, when Alyssa Milano and other women started tweeting about the Harvey Weinstein s*xual abuse cases with the hashtag #MeToo, it went viral. The phrase and hashtag quickly grew into a large movement that spread around the world.
Burke, along with a group of other well-known activists called “the silence breakers,” was named the 2017 Time Person of the Year. Burke gives speeches all over the country, and right now she is the Senior Director of Girls for Gender Equity in Brooklyn. Burke is already married.

Tana is a married woman. She tied the knot in the year 2020. However, she kept her husband out of the limelight. She keeps his identity a secret. He was the first person she told about her assault.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, she said, “The man who is now my daughter’s father was my first love. We dated throughout high school and college. I was 23 when I became pregnant. Our daughter, Kaia, is 24. I felt old enough to be a mom, and I’d been with her dad for years, but I hadn’t planned to get pregnant.”

She continued, I met my husband in the year 1990. He is eight years older than me and used to live in my neighborhood in New York, the Bronx. I was not interested in him at the time. He told me when I was 17 that we’d get married. I said, “That’s impossible. We got married in 2020.”
Burke also noted, “My husband is a little old-fashioned and traditional, so marriage was very important to him. I love him and wanted to be in business with him. That could have gone a number of ways, but I appreciate marriage a lot more than I did before. My husband was the first person I told about the s*xual assault that happened to me when I was seven years old. He made a space for me to feel safe.”

Burke was born and raised in the New York City borough of The Bronx. She grew up in a housing project with a low-income, working-class family. As a child and a teenager, she was raped and s*xually assaulted. Her mother helped her get better after these bad things happened and pushed her to get involved in the community.
