His English teacher’s mother is Anne Baldwin Carter. He has three siblings, one of whom is the author of children’s books. As a kid, people called him Ash and Stoobie.

Carter grew up on Wheatsheaf Lane in the Pennsylvania town of Abington. At age 11, he was fired from his first job at a car wash in Philadelphia for “bad-mouthing the owner.”
