Purdy started his freshman year at Iowa State in 2018 as the third string behind Kyle Kempt and Zeb Noland. Overall, he started eight games. He completed 146 of 220 passes for 2,250 yards, 16 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also ran for 308 yards and five touchdowns. He was back as the starter in 2019.
Purdy was picked by the San Francisco 49ers with the last pick of the NFL Draft in 2022, making him Mr. Irrelevant for that year. In a 44–23 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on October 23, 2022, Purdy took over at quarterback for Jimmy Garoppolo in the fourth quarter. Purdy threw for 66 yards and had one pass that was picked off.

On December 4, 2022, against the Miami Dolphins, Garoppolo got hurt in the first quarter and was ruled out for the rest of the game. Purdy was again asked to take over for him. Purdy is the first “Mr. Irrelevant” to throw a touchdown pass and eventually won for an NFL team as a quarterback.
