According to the Georgia Bulldogs website, Kirby Smart and Mary Beth Lycett met when they both worked in the athletic department at the University of Georgia. Smart’s bio on the team website says, “The couple met long after they were both undergraduates at Georgia. Lycett, who was working in the UGA Athletic Association Business Office at the time, helped set up Smart’s trip to interview for the Bulldogs’ running backs coaching job in 2005.”

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says that they started dating the same year that Kirby joined Mark Richt’s staff as Bulldogs coach. They fell in love and tied the knot in 2006 at St. James United Methodist Church in Alpharetta, Georgia.
Mary Beth Smart, just like her hubby, was a Bulldogs athlete. She played college basketball in Georgia and now she and her husband run the Kirby Smart Family Foundation. The couple’s youngest son is a big part of the Bulldogs team for the 2022-2023 season. Darnell Washington, a tight end, told a news station, “I mean, Andrew is like my little brother. I have two little girls of my own and a lot of nephews, so I just think of it as one of my own.
