Opposites attract. At least, that’s how Christie Brinkley sees love.
When Brinkley met her boyfriend, singer John Mellencamp, 64, for the first time last year, she said, “Oh my god, we’re so different. He’s like a silent cowboy from another time,'” she remembers him saying. “But then we talked, and we found out that we have a lot in common.”
Both Brinkley and Mellencamp have three children, and Mellencamp has five children and six grandchildren.
“I know guys who date girls who are way too young for them. They’ll make a reference, and they’ll be like, “What does that mean?” In the latest issue of PEOPLE, Brinkley says.
“There’s something nice about being the same age when it comes to relationships.”
She hasn’t had any trouble with hers at all. The supermodel who became famous in the 1970s as a magazine cover girl is now 62 and still modeling. She has turned her ageless all-American sex appeal into a lifestyle empire that is worth an estimated $80 million.
Brinkley sells Total Gym and Christie Brinkley Authentic Skincare through infomercials. She also has a successful line of hair extensions, and in her book Timeless Beauty, which came out last fall, she wrote about how she stays beautiful. Next, Bellissima, a new line of organic prosecco from Brinkley, will be coming out this summer.
“It’s kind of amazing to be 62 and has so many options,” she told PEOPLE last month when they visited her estate in Bridgehampton, New York. “I never for a second take that for granted.”
After what she calls “a very tough decade” in which she lost both of her parents and went through a nasty divorce and custody battle with her fourth husband, Peter Cook, Brinkley is the first to say how lucky she is.

“Seeing your loved ones suffer is the hardest thing in the world,” says Brinkley, whose mother Marjorie died of a heart attack after a stroke in 2012. This was just a few weeks after her husband Donald died after a long fight with Parkinson’s disease. “And to go through a divorce at the same time, and a very public one? It was a hard time, no question about it.”
Now, Brinkley is sneaky about her own love life.
Even though she has been dating John Mellencamp for a year, she says, “You never really know what’s going to happen.” “John and I are both people whose lives are very full. We just try to enjoy each other when we can and not put too much pressure on it.
