According to the Associated Press, the local prosecutor’s office in the Pacific coast state of Nayarit said late Wednesday that an American had been arrested on New Year’s Day but didn’t say much else.
The Mexican newspaper Tribuna de la Baha said that Baroni, who is 46 years old, was arrested on New Year’s Day by the State Tourist Police. He had called for help because his girlfriend was not responding in their hotel room in San Francisco, Nayarit, also known as San Pancho. Just to the north of Puerto Vallarta is San Francisco.
The woman, who was identified by authorities as Paola, was found in bed with only a sheet covering her and many bruises, the outlet said. No signs of life were there.
